The municipality of Sulop was separated from the mother municipality of Padada became an independent municipality by virtue of Executive Order No. 295 issued by President Carlos P. Garcia. It has a total land area of 15,526 hectares with 25 barangays. Mr. Nestor Comahig was the first appointed mayor. The municipality is bounded on the north by Padada, on the east by Davao Gulf, on the south by Malalag and on the west by Kiblawan. The word Sulop means swampy place surrounded by second growth forest and habitat of wild pigs.
